Eighteen hotels, and in each of them one thing worth walking in to see.

Eighteen hotels, and in each of them one thing worth walking in to see. We start the entry with that thing — a gate, a ceiling, a clock, a pool, a chapel of ice — and open out from it to the building it belongs to.

The whole guide · eighteen entries

A full survey of a hotel tells you what it has. One thing tells you what it is. A gate that faces inward, a ceiling put together without nails, a chapel cut again every winter: each of these was a decision somebody took, and the rest of the building follows from it. So we write the thing first, then the building around it, and stop there. How this guide is written.
